Frankincense (Boswellia carteri, Boswellia serrata) or Olibanum is made from the hardened sap or resin of a small, shrub-like tree found only in Ethiopia, Oman, Somalia, India, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Throughout history it has had many uses including a burnt offering to gods, part of the burial process to cover odors or to drive out evil spirits. Even today, frankincense has a reputation for breaking ties with the past and letting go of unwanted thoughts that seem to persist the mind.
This heavenly smelling substance is one of the most soothing essential oils available. Frankincense is deeply calming, revitalizing and uplifting. It is most well known for its ability to slow and deepen our breathing, helping to decrease anxiety, stress and nervous tension. Deepened breathing promotes calm and relaxation.
The best way to use Frankincense for a calming effect is to place 1-2 drops on a soft cloth or cotton pad and inhale any time of the day. Whenever you feel stressed out, remember to sniff the scented pad for a few minutes to lessen the tension before it escalates.
