Calming Aromatherapy Scents: Roman Chamomile

Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis, Chamaemelum nobile) is a low-growing, perennial herb.  Roman Chamomile essential oil is made from the herb’s white flowers.  As the name suggests, the scent was used by the Romans for incense and in beverages.  An interesting fact about the herb is it is often referred to as “the plant doctor” for its ability to assist with the health and growth of other plants used to produce essential oil.

Roman Chamomile is best known for its sedative and soothing qualities.  It gives an overall calming effect for the stressed out mind and reduces muscular tension.  It is used to ease feelings of grief, anger, discontent, anxiousness, nervous tension and restlessness.  It is deeply relaxing which makes it a perfect aid for those who have trouble sleeping.

To help support calm and relaxation, you can use a drop of the essential oil on the palm of the hand to inhale whenever needed. A few drops of Roman Chamomile can also be used in a diffuser or added to a relaxing, pre-bed bath to promote a peaceful sleep.  Applying several drops to the soles of the feet can also calm nerves.
