Sandalwood (Santalum album) comes from a small, evergreen tree with pinky-purple flowers. The essential oil is either steam or water-distilled from the powdered heart wood of the tree and its major roots. Sandalwood has been an important part of devotional rituals in India for at least 2000 years. The ancient Egyptians also used it in their embalming formulas. Today, it is still extremely popular in perfumes because of its delightfully sweet, woody and spicy scent.
Sandalwood quiets and stills the mind making it an excellent choice for relieving nervous tension, depression, irritation and frustration. It is cooling and calming which makes it ideal to help prevent tension headaches and to relieve insomnia. It also happens to act as an aphrodisiac with its ability to arouse sexual energy.
To use Sandalwood essential oil, put a drop or two in a diffuser to enjoy it throughout the home. You can also apply a few drops to the palm or wrists and inhale that way. Or, inhale the oil directly from the jar.
