I have a revolving birthday/Christmas list that I keep on the desktop of my computer. It’s right there on the main screen so that whenever I think of something new and exciting to add, I can do it quickly before forgetting. One of the recent items on my list was a Himalayan salt lamp and since it was my birthday a few weeks ago, my hubby took the hint. Happy 34th Birthday to me! It has been sitting on my nightstand which in my opinion, is the perfect place for it. It gives off this romantic, warm light that is just bright enough to create a pink/orange glow in the corner of our bedroom. Plus, it boasts a whole slew of other benefits and since we live in a very dark, basement apartment with no natural air flow, we can use all the help we can get!
What is a Himalayan Salt Lamp?
Himalayan salt lamps are literally natural, solid pieces of salt or baskets of salt crystals with a small bulb or candle inside to light them up. The genuine ones are made from pure, Himalayan salt crystals found in the mines of the Himalayan mountains in Pakistan. When purchasing a salt lamp, it is important to make sure that it is from a genuine Himalayan crystal source and not a cheap imitation. They come in an assortment of different shapes and sizes and are available in naturally occurring, rich colors like oranges, reds, yellows and whites.
The Benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps
First of all, Himalayan salt lamps give off a beautiful, soft, glow providing a peaceful, serene ambiance. The pinkish light is romantic and homey and has a similar feel and brightness as candlelight.
Second, Himalayan salt lamps change unhealthy positive ions to healthy negative ions which naturally generated by sunlight, waterfalls and lightening storms. When your lamp is turned on, it takes in moisture that may be lingering in the air, renders positive ions harmless, and puts negative ions back into the air. Salt is hygroscopic, meaning that it attracts water to its surface which in turn, evaporates quickly due to the small amount of heat from the bulb within it. You may even notice that your salt lamp tends to sweat in a humid environment and with prolonged exposure to high humidity, it may even begin to melt. Negative ions are generated during the evaporation process leading to improved indoor air quality, a fresher smell, easier breathing and a better sleep. Many people that own salt lamps have reported a decrease in symptoms related to allergies and breathing issues such as asthma and bronchitis. This is most likely due to a decrease in dust, bacteria, viruses, molds and allergens which carry a positive charge in their environment.
Finally, Himalayan salt lamps are said to decrease fatigue and increase energy levels. Positive ions steal our energy…but with more negative ions in the air you will notice a difference in your motivational levels and mood.
Where Should I Put My Himalayan Salt Lamp?
Pretty much anywhere in your living space where you would like to improve the air quality! Some salt lamp owners like to place theirs near televisions, computers, air conditioners and other electrical equipment to off-set the unhealthy, positive ions or electro-magnetic radiation generated from these contraptions. Others will place their lamps near their bed to decrease coughing and stuffiness for a better sleep.
So, go ahead and get yourself a Himalayan salt lamp! In fact, get a whole bunch of them and put one in each room of your home for maximum air quality. Put it on your birthday/Christmas wish list if you have to! I know I will.
